In the much-awaited Union Cabinet expansion, 43 ministers were inducted, seven promoted to Cabinet rank, while 12 sitting ministers were shown the door. The study argues the reshuffle has taken place after the BJP’s defeat in West Bengal, the government’s  visible failures in tackling the pandemic’s second wave, and with important assembly elections round the corner, especially in Uttar Pradesh; that  the new cabinet reflects pandemic, politics and PM’s perception; that it is about protecting Brand Modi; that it is representative of Indian diversity; that in the end it is all about politics; that changes are less to with general elections: assembly elections the main target; a view that it may have been an act of desperation etc.
