The violence on Republic Day, 26 January, has spurred the government into action. Cases have been registered against persons indulging in violence, including against over 30 of the 40 farm union leaders who were involved in talks with the Centre. The violence has placed farm leaders on backfoot. The study suggests the confrontation  could turn more hostile; the perception that the movement is leaderless and ‘rudderless’; that both sides should relinquish maximalist position; the issue of who is financing the movement; a view that the government has already conceded too much and that it should hold firm now; that farmers still have a strong case for a legal minimum support price (MSP); and significantly, the importance of history, culture and the people to understand the agitation.
