The root cause of the insurgency in J&K can be traced to the 1979 Soviet invasion of Afghanistan that brought mercenaries or ‘jihadis’ to Afghanistan. As soon as the war ended they became the ‘jihadis’ of Kashmir. The study examines possibility of revival of violence in Kashmir after US troops’ withdrawal; impact on Pakistan of a prolonged civil war in Afghanistan; that backing terrorism in Kashmir could take a back seat in Pakistan; basically Pakistan, not India, will bear the consequences of US withdrawal; and the ground reality of  Afghanistan in the context of its future.
