Afghanistan: India’s Options

With the focus of US foreign policy shifting to East Asia even as it withdraws from Afghanistan, the U.S. wants India to play a key role in Indo-Pacific. But unlike the other members of the Quad,  India alone  has a contested land border with China. And it has to  prevent Afghanistan from becoming another safe haven for anti-India terrorist groups, and also check Pakistan deepening its influence in Kabul. The study emphasises India’s options include talks with Taliban and enhance aid to Afghanistan’s legitimate government; making common cause with regional  players like Iran; taking a ‘layered approach’;  maybe use SAARC; but all in all, the options are ‘diminished.’
