Domestic Politics Impact China Policy: BJP’s China Perception

Situation assessment as on 29 June, 2020

The domestic fallout of the border clash has not followed a single course. At one level, there is outrage over the deaths of soldiers. There have been protests over China made products even as the government took steps to make India inhospitable for Chinese businesses. The political  reactions have generally followed the course of domestic polarization. The government, while feeling the heat, has meanwhile, kept its cool.

In the absence of any policy statement by the government, the position of the BJP can best be described by its General Secretary, Ram Madhav. India, according to him, would remain on ground and continue to claim Aksai Chin, even as it engages with China diplomatically. The study elaborates his views as also of Dr Rakesh Sinha (MP and member of the BJP) and Baijayant “Jay” Panda (National Vice-President, BJP).
