South Asia In Turmoil: The Geographic Imperative and India’s Role

South Asia is in turmoil with Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Afghanistan, all threatened by instability. These developments are very consequential to India’s national security. The study explains the logic of geography;  and discuses each of these countries including Nepal, Bangladesh. In respect of Sri Lanka while India’s generous help has created much goodwill, there are lessons to be learnt, including  the challenge from China. For Nepal, the study examines possibilities of cultural geography. In respect of Pakistan the view is that Islamabad’s policies are deliberately anti-geography. For Bangladesh the challenge is to hold on to common cultural and social bonds.  On Afghanistan, the study suggests  India should not remain passive. Finally, the study explains relevance of developments in the neighbourhood along with  overarching lessons for India.
