Income Inequalities Worsen During Pandemic

There has been growing concern over the extent to which income and wealth disparities have widened during the pandemic. The rising unemployment rate, increasing casualisation of the workforce, financial distress among MSMEs (Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises)  has exacerbated inequalities across various axes. The main concern, explains the  study is the reduction in household incomes; that those in urban areas got more impacted than their rural counterparts; that casual labour, petty trader, household workers among worst hit; examines the Oxfam report indicating decline in income of 84% households; disagrees with Oxfam’s suggestion to target the rich because it will not help the poor; considers  the various estimation methods on poverty like Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI), Human Development Index (HDI) andGlobal hunger Index (GHI); concludes that consumer-based poverty estimates are the most realistic;
