India China Interplay for Influence in Sri Lanka

Closely after Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit to Sri Lanka on January 8-9,  at a virtual meeting on 15 January between  External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Sri Lanka’s Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, the former gave an assurance that India will support Sri Lanka “in all possible ways for overcoming the economic and other challenges posed by COVID-19 pandemic”.  The study describes India’s “four-pronged” rescue act, that includes Lines of Credit, currency swap, debt deferrals, as well as the conclusion of the Trinco-oil farms project. It explains China’s Indian Ocean strategy and India’s probable counter; concern over China’s outreach to Sri-Lankan Tamils; growing resentment in Sri Lanka against China;  Sri Lanka’s balancing China with India with a conclusion that a pushback against China has begun.
